Dental Veneers

dental veneersDental veneers are thin shells, cemented to the front of the teeth to correct flaws in the teeth.  They are usually made of porcelain or a composite resin to match the color of natural teeth.  This is a cosmetic treatment, and is usually recommended to:

  • Close large spaces and gaps between the teeth
  • Whitening stained or discolored teeth
  • Improve the appearance of misshapen teeth
  • Correct slightly crooked teeth
  • Restore teeth that have been broken, chipped, fractured, or worn down

Dental veneers usually require two appointments.  In the initial visit, your dentist will need to verify that there are no cavities in the teeth that will be receiving the veneers, and that you are free of gum disease.  Your dentist will then prepare the teeth to receive veneers by grinding down the top layer of your existing tooth structure.  This will enable the veneers to be placed on the teeth.  An impression will be taken and set to a dental lab, where it will be used to fabricate your veneers.  When the veneers have been completed, you will return to your dentist’s office, and the veneers will be bonded to your teeth.

Depending on the condition of your teeth before treatment, your veneers can provide anything from a subtle enhancement of your smile to a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your teeth.  Contact your dentist to schedule a consultation and learn more about dental veneers.
